azy Ways Cats

If you like cats...you've landed in the purr-fect spot!

Several of my cats came from The Humane Society of Charlotte. Please remember them or your local shelter when looking for a family pet. And don't forget...older cats make WONDERFUL companions!

If you are not able to give a cat a home, consider making a donation of time, money or usable items to the shelter of your choice.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Shelter also has hundreds of dogs and cats, along with occasional snakes and pot-bellied pigs, to choose from for adoption. Prices vary by species, gender and age. It includes the vaccinations against feline distemper, upper respiratory complex and rabies. The animals are given a physical exam and tested for feline leukemia and feline Aids. The cost for spaying or neutering is also included. Charlotte and Mecklenburg County residents must pay $7.50 for a license.

Help control the pet population...spay or neuter your cat. For those in the Charlotte vicinity, the The Humane Society of Charlotte operates a low cost spay/neuter clinic. They can alter your cat as early as 4 months of age. To ensure this is available to all cat owners, spaying is only $33.50 and neutering is only $27.50. Go by or call the shelter for an application.

Learn about SPAY DAY USA sponsored by the Doris Day Animal Foundation. It's a national campaign to raise the public's awareness of the severe companion animal overpopulation problem, to promote spay/neutering as the primary means of addressing this overpopulation, and to inspire each American to take personal responsibility for preventing the births of unwanted litters. The next SPAY DAY USA will take place on February 28, 2006.

The Great Outdoor Debate

Most veterinarians and humane professionals advocate an indoor-only lifestyle for cats unless they are on a leash or in an enclosure. Busy roads and highways are not the only things lurking outside that can shorten the life of your cat. Check out what other dangers await your cat as it roams in the great outdoors.

In memory of those who have crossed the rainbow bridge...

If tears could build a stairway,
And memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to Heaven
And bring you home again.

Nobel prize winning author, Ernest Hemingway, was also a cat lover. Approximately 60 cats now live on the grounds of the house in Key West, Florida that he owned from 1931 till 1961. It is now the Ernest Hemingway Museum. Many of the cats are polydactyl, which means they have extra toes. Hemingway was given a six-toed cat by a ship's captain and some of the cats who live on the museum grounds are descendents of that original cat.
